Book Review: Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Review of the book Man's Search for Meaning.
Rating: 5/5
Author: Victor Frankl
Genre: NonFiction/Personal Narrative/History/Holocaust
{ A profound journey from death camp to existentialism }
Victor Frankl's "Man's Search for a Meaning" is excellent work on "Why your Existence matter". He was a survivor of the Holocaust. If you don't know about the Holocaust, it was the mass slaughter of Jewish people under the Nazi German regime. So because Sir Victor was also a Jewish person, he was also one of the Holocaust members. So this book talks about why the "Meaning of life" is important.
When Sir Victor and many Jewish people were put in the concentration camp, no one knew what would happen. Will they die or survive? They didn't realise that most would never see the world again. They didn't know that most of them would die in gas chambers(A room in which people were put and that room was filled with gas to kill the mass amount of people with it). In the first place, Sir Victor was also the same as other people, only hoping they would be set free and see their loved ones again, but it was only an exceptional case. But later, he changed his perspective to see things, and eventually, in the end, only a few people survived along with him.
In concentration camps, People were beaten for no reason, even for little mistakes. They were made to do forced labour. A thing Sir Victor noticed there was that people were only hoping for survival, sometimes on the days of Christmas. So when they were not released on these days(which Nazi Germany was not going to do, basically fake hopes), people often committed suicide. Many people there became mentally disturbed, and because of it, many became abnormal persons, so what was the reason that Sir Victor survived all this?
He found a way to overcome this struggle and turned it into something beautiful, something meaningful; He learned that if he and his fellows only hoped to survive on a specific date and if it didn't happen, they would be sad, and as a conclusion meaning of life/meaning to live wasn't in the "Hope of Survival". He discovered that life's meaning is necessary; it can be a purpose, a thing or your beloved person. It is essential for every phase of life and is different in every stage. So he thought there was no meaning to keeping the hope of survival.
The most heartbreaking phase I found in this book is when people who survived return home happy with the hope that they will continue their lives where they left off and will meet their beloved families. But, when they returned to their homes, many family members refused to accept them, and many closed the door on them; I learned how people could be cruel, like they survived all of this for literally nothing. It's a sad part.
What makes this book authentic?
Sir Victor is a holocaust survivor, so he has seen the things you and I aren't able to see; he has survived those moments that aren't imaginable for us. So every part of the book is a reality.
It is one of the books close to my heart, and I want to share many things with you regarding this book, but I will leave you up till here so you can enjoy it yourself. It's a must-read, fascinating, concise, and discusses how human psychology works.
That's a wrap for this one <3
